Variety of Sciatica Symptoms

There are many sciatica symptoms. Pain is the most common symptom of sciatica. Most patients feel an acute pain or a burning sensation in the buttock, thigh, calf, lower leg, ankle, or foot. The severity of pain varies widely from just mild cramp-like aches to sharp pain causing immobility of the leg. Sometimes, the pain is accompanied by a 'pins and needles' sensation or numbness of the lower leg and foot. It worsens during the night or when you sneeze, laugh and strain in your toilet seat.

Other sciatica symptoms include weakness, tingling, numbness, and lower back pain. Leg muscles, usually on one side of the body as with pain, can weaken. Severe weakness can make it difficult for patients to even lift up their legs or stand up and walk around. Sciatica symptoms not only affect legs, but they may extend to neck and back pain as well. The lower back pain stretching down to the buttock or to the leg is a good indication of back disc. A back disc is a normal aging process of wear and tear on the spine. The most common disc disorder found in sciatica patients is a herniated disc.
