Self Care For Sciatica Relief

Do you want to know what you can do to get sciatica relief? There are several things you can do to prevent and lessen the symptoms of sciatica.

One of the methods to get sciatica relief is by resting for long periods of time. Patients can rest by lying down on a firm mattress or the floor and only move when they have to go to the bathroom or to eat. Resting has been a traditional treatment for sciatica, but some doctors now claim that resting is not very effective. Recent studies recommend patients to stay as active as possible. The research indicates that some movements are more beneficial in lessening the inflammation of the nerve. One method for sciatica relief is applying heat or ice packs on the painful areas of the body.

Another way to get sciatica relief is by getting good sleep. Of course, patients should only sleep on a firm mattress or the floor. When you are sleeping on your back, put a pillow under your knees for maximum comfort. If you sleep on your side, then a pillow between your knees will give the same effect. All patients must avoid sitting, standing, or exercising for an extensive period of time. When sitting, use a chair that supports your back. Avoid sitting with bad posture such as leaning forward and bending legs. If you have to sit down for a long time, make sure you get up and stretch at least once every hour.
