The Longest Nerve In The Body: Sciatica Nerve

At its largest point, it is about as big as an adult's thumb.

Sciatica is caused by irritation or damage done to the sciatica nerve, which is the largest and the longest nerve in the body. It is roughly the size of an average adult's pinky finger.

The sciatica nerve originates from the lower spine. It then spreads out into two divisions. Each one travels through the pelvis and into each side of the buttocks. It passes through and connects to the back of the thigh, the lower leg, and then to the foot. A large part of the sciatica nerve branches off to support hamstring muscles, making it responsible for control of the legs and feet. Hamstring muscles are composed of three muscles and is formed in the posterior pelvis and extends up to the back of the knee. This connection makes the sciatic nerve very vulnerable in pelvic fractures and hip dislocations. Other injuries and pressures of any type on this area may damage the nerve. Impaired sciatica nerves may lead to pain, inflammation, and weakness in the leg and lower back. The most common injuries that cause sciatica nerve pain are external compression and a herniated disc.
